Gary Grainger’s 1969 Zemaitis Prototype

Here’s one for the Zemaitis collectors. Gary Grainger’s unique and very early Zemaitis solid body electric. Gary has owned this for over 30 years. This guitar, first seen in Tony’s workshop in 1969, is possibly the first ever Zemaitis solid body electric. Features include a real solid silver head piece bearing the Zemaitis name (hand-engraved by Danny O’Brien, Gary Grainger’s cousin), a plain aluminum truss rod cover (originally black plastic), two pairs of Strat pickups arranged zebra-style, hand-made wood-and-metal bridge and alloy tailpiece, ebony board, and a hand-carved top and back in mahogany, glued together so it looks like a one piece body. An odd mixture of spare Grover and Schaller machine heads complete the picture.
