Leon Wilkeson’s 1963 Gibson Thunderbird Bass

Click on a photo to view full size image

A very rare piece of Southern Rock History! This bass was owned and used by the late great Leon Wilkeson. Leon used this bass live and in the studio with Lynyrd Skynyrd in the 1970’s, The Rossington Collins Band, and on the 1987-88 Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour. This bass was one of Leon’s favorite basses to play, if not his favorite. The original sunburst finish was repainted to a blue/white burst by Leon sometime in the late 70’s or early 80’s. An extended metal arm was made by a member of the crew and friend of Leon’s and attached to the upper horn of the bass to accommodate Leon’s left arm after it was injured in the 1977 plane crash. The brass nut was made by Allen Chester and the bass comes with the original flight case that is stenciled “Rossington Collins Band – Leon Wilkeson – Fragile” . This is your chance to own an incredible bass from a Southern Legend and a great person. Comes with the original flight case and a detailed letter from a member of Skynyrd’s road crew and one of Leon’s good friends. Please call or email for price.
