This is Black Sabbath’s 1979 Heaven And Hell Original Album Artwork by Harry Carmean. It’s the original drawing featuring all four members of Black Sabbath: Tony Iommi, Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, that was created for the back cover of the band’s 1979 Heaven and Hell album. This is the original, one-of-a-kind artwork—not a print.

Warner Brothers commissioned Carmean to create the artwork, and he produced three drawings featuring all four band members for the art director to review. Although the original agreement called for the selected drawing to be used only on the back cover of the album, it was subsequently featured extensively in the album’s nationwide advertising campaign, including a billboard on the Sunset Strip and was also featured in a full-page advertisement on the back cover of the June 28, 1980, issue of Billboard magazine. The final artwork can be seen in these photos of Tony Iommi’s personal 1980 “Sample Record” copy of Heaven and Hell.

After the artwork was selected, the art director returned all the submitted drawings to Carmean, including the original used on the album. The individual drawings of Tony Iommi, Ronnie James Dio, Bill Ward, and Geezer Butler were rearranged and brought together to create the final LP cover composition. This original piece comes with a detailed, signed letter from Harry Carmean, all sketches created for the album, photos and a video and of Harry talking about the artwork, and a signed book personally dedicated to Greg Dorsett.
