Malcolm Cope’s 1970s Silver Sparkle Slingerland Drum Kit Used With Quartz From 1976-1984

This incredible drum kit belonged to Malcolm Cope, drummer of Quartz. It is a 1970s Slingerland Silver Sparkle kit, originally purchased new in 1976 from Drumland in Birmingham, England. When Tony Iommi produced Quartz’s debut album in 1976–77, he wanted a drum sound closer to Bill Ward’s signature tone. After trying different kits, including Malcolm’s original Fibes kit, this Slingerland set delivered exactly the sound Tony was looking for. It was selected for the recording sessions and used throughout the entire debut album. After recording was completed, Malcolm added two smaller toms to the setup for touring. The kit was then used on all of Quartz’s albums and tours until Malcolm retired it in 1984. During this period, Quartz toured with Black Sabbath, Rush, Gillan, and UFO. The kit is also prominently featured on the front and back cover of Quartz’s live album, Live Quartz. Malcolm Cope can be seen in these black and white photos performing with Quartz at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1978, when they opened for Black Sabbath. Included are all the original drum cases and a detailed letter from Malcolm. The Slingerland 24″ black bass drum head is not included.

This is a fantastic piece of Quartz history with a direct connection to Tony Iommi and the recording of the band’s debut album.
