This is one hell of a kit. My good friend Malcolm Cope’s 1970’s Silver Sparkle Slingerland kit that was bought in 1976 from Drumland in Birmingham England. Tony Iommi produced Quartz’ debut album in 1976-77 and wasn’t happy with the sound with Malcolm’s original kit. Tony wanted more of a “Bill Ward” sound. After trying different drum kits, this was the drum kit that had that sound! It was used on the entire album. After the recording of the album had finished, Malcolm added the two smaller toms for touring. This drum kit was used on all Quartz albums and tours until Malcolm retired it in 1984. Quartz supported Black Sabbath, Rush, Gillan, and UFO. This kit is also featured on the cover their live album “Live Quartz”. Pictured here is a photo of Malcolm and a B/W photo of Quartz in 1978 when they opened up for Black Sabbath at the Hammersmith Odeon in London.
